History of Cartagena |
Coinage
Although Carthage was one of the world's largest traders,
they did not use coinage until late in the 3rd century,
after Hamilcar had taken over the silver mines in Spain.
The Phoenician towns in Sicily had begun to issue coinage
in the 5th century to pay the mercenaries, but Cartagena
felt no need until it too needed to pay mercenaries
enrolled in Hannibal's army in c.220 BCE.
Hasdrubal had coins minted in gold and silver that bore
his image, as well as the image of Hamilcar. A later
issue was produced with the image of Hannibal. All were
of silver, with a horse and palm tree, or an elephant
on the reverse. After the Romans took control of Cartagena
in 209 BCE, the mint produced coins with the Roman general
Scipio's portrait. The mint at Cartagena remained active
until well into the Byzantine Age of the Roman empire,
carrying the portraits of Roman officials stationed
in Cartagena or the current emperor. The coins types
vary considerably and would require an extensive study.
Monuments
Little remains of Carthago Nova, as the stones have
been reused in the new city of Cartagena. One can still
see a few partial walls, and a column or two from the
forum or amphitheatre, but they would pass unrecognised
except to the experts. The tomb of Titus Didius has
been located, and some relics are in the local museum.
